TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to Lord Rayleigh [John William Strutt, Fellow of the Royal Society]
Date12 December 1898
DescriptionThe Committee considered Rucker's [National Physical Laboratory] scheme and altered it in parts. A copy will be sent to Rayleigh. They further decided to ask that £5000 might be included as to estimates for building. The grant cannot be voted till August, hence the Director cannot be appointed till October or November next. The Director ought to have a large share in planning the building and probably no work can begin till the spring of 1900, hence they are not likely to spend more than £5000 before August 1900. Rucker will not communicate this decision to the Treasury until he hears from Rayleigh.

A serious hitch has arisen in the question as to whether the land in the Deer Park can be let on other than a building lease but Rucker is in communication with the Treasury on the subject, and will write more freely later.
