Description | In reply to Sinclair's letter of the 27th November 1899, asking for information concerning the medal struck by the Royal Society in honour of Captain Cook, the medal was struck in 1784 not 1774, in both silver and bronze. Encloses a copy of the minutes of the Council at the time [not enclosed]. The Society posses a manuscript book of letters, suggestions, sketches et cetera but Harrison is unable to find among them any express description of the significance of the figure et cetera on the reverse of the medal. Gathers that the figure is meant for Britannia Exploration, leaning on an antique rostrum and holding a rudder resting on a terrestrial globe. |
