TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, Her Majesty's Treasury
Date3 December 1887
DescriptionReports the judgment of a small committee of Royal Society Fellows called upon to discuss the appointment of a member of the Meteorological Council due to the resignation of Professor Stokes, as the recommendation of Mr A Buchan, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, for the vacancy.

The only impediment to his nomination, namely his role as Inspector of the Meteorological Stations in Scotland under the Meteorological Council, for which he recieves an annual salary of £150 disbursed from the Parliamentary grant, can be overcome if he retains this duty and the Council of the Royal Society request of the Treasury that Buchan can receive remuneration for this role in addition to the amount he would receive for his place on the Meteorological Council. Foster agrees with the committee's findings and asks if the Treasury will sanction the proposal made.
