TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Miss Woodward, 129 Beaufort Street, Chelsea
Date24 September 1888
DescriptionRix records that the Royal Society Treasurer [John Evans] is no longer willing to pay the price Woodward charges for her work. Rix understands that they having been paying the same price to her as the 'Palaeontologia Indica', but the Treasurer highlighted that the maximum price the Royal Society have ever paid for a quarto plate is four pounds and four shillings, and often less. Mr Wesley, without being aware of being in competition, did quote four pounds and four shillings per plate for his work.

Although other draftsmen have been considered, Professor Harry Govier Seeley is so keen to have Woodward's work for at least part of the plates for his paper, that the Treasurer has told Rix to make an offer proposing that Woodward should undertake half the plates at four and a half guineas per quarto plate, and Mr Wesley's estimate of four guineas be accepted for the remainder, providing he be allowed to choose the simpler plates. Woodward is to let Rix know if she accepts the proposed compromise.

Rix further notes that the Officers had, in any case, made the decision to divide the plates to prevent delays to publication.
