TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Professor George Downing Liveing, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date22 December 1888
DescriptionRix has referred to a volume of the 'British Association Report' for evidence of where a different type indicates scientific significance, and suggests that the great bulk of italics in Dr Grunwald's paper was of no apparent scientific importance. Liveing is to be the arbiter though, with type allowed where he believes it to be necessary or advisable.

Rix disagreed with Liveing's assertion that if two kinds of type are used the quantities do not matter, pointing out the inelegance of excessive italics. The Royal Society is prepared to meet the wishes of Liveing, and would have referred the matter to him before falling back on their standard rule had there been time, with it having only recently been decided to print the full paper. It is unlikely to be ready for the meeting.

A postscript notes that Liveing will have a proof from the printers as soon as it is ready, but they are currently blocked by Christmas work. The tables were already nearly completed before printing stopped in response to Liveing's query, they are now completed and only being held back by the 'reading'.
