TitleCopy letter from Alfred Bray Kempe, to Sir Clements Robert Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society
Date1 November 1900
DescriptionIn answer to the letter sent to the Treasury by Mr Cocks and Kempe, asking for payment of the first instalment of the Government Grant in aid of the National Antarctic Expedition, they received a letter on 7 August enclosing an order for the amount. Quotes a passage from the letter noting the first contract for the ship is slightly in excess of the original estimate and the Treasury hope the progress of expenditure will be closely watched. In reply to this Longhurst stated that the hopes of Treasury will be brought to the attention of the Joint Antarctic Committee and the Executive Committee.

Kempe and Cocks have agreed it is desirable to have a meeting of the Joint Committee shortly, so that they may lay the letter of the Treasury before it. Asks Markham to ask Longhurst to issue notice of a meeting.

Markham has doubtless been told that during his absence cheques were signed by Kempe and himself in respect of certain payments to naval officers, on the understanding that the matter should be brought before the Joint Committee.
