TitleCopy letter from Arthur William Rucker to Sir Clements Robert Markham, [Fellow of the Royal Society], President of the Royal Geographical Society
Date7 December 1900
DescriptionThe Society has carefully considered Markham's letter of 5 December addressed to Sir Michael Foster but regret that their views do not match Markham's. Briefly discusses the formation of the Joint Committee [for Antarctic Exploration] noting that the Royal Society wanted the Joint Committee [with the Royal Geographical Society] to be the ultimate responsible body.

From article two of the definitions of the functions of the executive Committee it seems clear to the Royal Society that said Committee has to prepare for the consideration of the Joint Committee a general plan of the operations of the Expedition, and that it is not the duty of the Finance Committee to prepare such a plan.

The President and Council of the Royal Society will certainly refuse to consider any plan of the Expedition which has not yet been considered by the Joint Committee, which was appointed for this very purpose.
