| Description | A very serious outbreak of the disease [Human African trypanosomiasis] known as 'sleeping sickness' or 'negro lethargy' [sic] is reported from Uganda. The disease, which appears to attack [people of colour] only, has long been known in West Africa. It has so far slayed hundreds, and the rapidity of the outbreak could seriously undermine the development of the country.
Knowledge of the disease is incomplete, so President and Council propose to send a small expert commission to Uganda to study the disease on the spot. Dr Mott is well known for his work on nervous disease, and Dr Low is an expert in disease of parasitic and bacterial origin. They are both prepared to undertake the task. The sum of such an endeavour would probably be less than than one thousand pounds. |
