| Description | Regarding the report of Sir Herbert Maxwell's departmental Committee on the administration of the Meteorological Office, and the proposals of the Treasury, the Royal Society accepts that it is to continue to be responsible for the Meteorological Service where they can fulfil that service, but still believe a Government department is essential in the official conduct of administering weather reports and storm warnings.
Responsibility comes at a price. Remuneration of Committee members must be looked into. Cuts to the grants to Ben Nevis and Fortwilliam Observatories and to the Navy would not make savings recommended, therefore they cannot accept the task of providing these improvements to the service. It is estimated that present additional requirements for scientific investigation to be at least £2000 per annum. If an adequate annual grant were bestowed, and provision made with the Government of India, the Royal Society could see their way to continuing responsibility. |
