TitleCopy letter from Sir Michael Foster, to The Secretary, H M Treasury, Whitehall, S.W.
Date4 April 1901
DescriptionFoster replies to their letter of 29 March to transmit the enclosed five-page memorandum on the importance of the study of Terrestrial Magnetism, and how the proposed electric tramways will impact on this.

Includes a statement from the Astronomer Royal regarding the interference of electric tramways on the Observatory at Greenwich, which is different to that at Kew. While magnetic observations could continue at Greenwich, it cannot at Kew, and so a new site free from disturbances will be needed. Foster submits a breakdown of the cost of such an enterprise.
