TitleCopy letter from Sir Michael Foster, to The Under Secretary of State, The Colonial Office
Date23 May 1902
DescriptionAt present the contemplated Commission to investigate the recent volcanic eruptions in the West Indies [Caribbean] will consist of [John Smith] Flett, a government geologist provided by the Board of Education, and Dr Tempest Anderson. They set sail on 28 May. It would be desirable to obtain trustworthy evidence regarding the actual occurrences at St Vincent. Perhaps someone with a connection to the island could gather attested statements. Samples in glass bottles of polluted water is also required.

As the research is so soon to begin, it would be most helpful if H M Secretary of State could arrange for the evidence to be collected. A Committee has been appointed to direct the investigations, and the Admiralty have been approached in the matter of travel arrangements.
