| Description | Has consulted M Foster regarding Holderness' letter of the previous day. Believes the Society would only willing undertake to suggest a list of names of experts who might be charged by the Government of India with the duty with regard to selecting a man of the qualifications required.
Regarding Holderness' question as to the possibility of obtaining at the present time an officer in England for the salary offered, there is an element of hazard in appointing an officer untried in Indian conditions. Whoever is appointed, previous training such as is specified in page two of the letter returned herewith [not enclosed], is essential.
The resolutions and covering letter for[?] the Observatories Committee perhaps hardly sufficiently emphasize what Holderness will remember was the general premise, that in order to make full use of such a scientific effort, it is essential that the staff of the department should be strengthened so that the appointee should be cleared as far as possible of administrative duties.
Does not see the point of the distinction on page two between the control[?] of future astronomical observatories, and the work of solar physics and magnetic observatories. |
