TitleCopy letter from Sir Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies
Date2 December 1902
DescriptionVentures to bring attention to the following matter on behalf of the Royal Society. Much remains to be known about Malta Fever. David Bruce who discovered the disease has brought to the notice of the Royal Society that Dr Zaumit[?], Medical Officer of Health of Malta, is engaged in investigating the disease but his routine duties prevent his giving the investigation the undivided attention it needs. Bruce has great confidence in Zaumit's ability to carry out the investigation and Foster is to suggest the desirability of the Under Secretary making known to the Maltese Government the hygienic benefits which might result if Zaumit were given facilities to continue his studies by being relieved of his ordinary studies, or most of them. Should the Malta Government be prepared to do this, and to contribute towards the expenses of the investigation, the Royal Society should be prepared to consider the granting of a small contribution toward the same object. It being at least possible that Malta Fever is conveyed by means of a mosquito or other insect, it might be desirable for the Maltese Government to consult Major Ross as to the best method of exterminating or at least diminishing the mosquitoes on the island.
