Description[Copy letter marked 'Cancelled' and crossed through] With reference to his letter of 8 December, the Committee of the Royal Society charged with the supervision investigating Sleeping Sickness have now had an interview with Dr Low, just returned from Uganda. As a result the Committee are confirmed that it is eminently desirable that measures should be adopted for the segregation of the diseased, especially in the outlying districts in which the disease has not yet widely spread, if such measures can be efficiently enforced.

The Committee are convinced much remains to be done, especially regarding the etiology of the disease, before any definite recommendations can be be for preventive or remedial measures. The members were unanimous that a competent investigator be sent out as soon as possible to work with Dr Castellani the bacteriologist, and Dr Hodges, or other members of the local staff. The Committee have ascertained that the highly qualified investigator Dr Scholberg is willing to proceed to Uganda on the same terms as those offered to Dr Castellani and Dr Christy. The Royal Society is prepared to guarantee the remuneration to the observer, who it is proposed should be sent on a nine month commission. The Society hopes His Majesty's Secretary of State will see his way to making the same provision with regard to the transport and maintenance of the observer while on the proposed duty as was made in the case of the others members of the Commission.

In view of the urgency involved, if the Secretary of State approves Foster recommends they communicate direct with Dr Scholberg at St Bartholomew's Hospital.
