| Description | With reference to his letter of the 8 December, the Committee of the Royal Society charged with the supervision of the investigation into sleeping sickness have now interviewed Dr Low, who has just returned from Uganda. As a result the Committee can only repeat what was stated in Foster's last letter, that the disease being communicable from man to man, measures of segregation may be recommended. The Committee are unable to express an opinion as to how far segregation is practicable in the infected districts, though it might undoubtedly be adopted with success in the outlying districts into which the disease is beginning to spread. Following the interview with Low the Committee have concluded it would be most desirable to send out at once another observer to assist Dr Castellani.
The Committee have ascertained that a Dr Nabaroo, whom they consider a highly qualified investigator, is willing to proceed to Uganda on the same terms as Castellani and Christy. The Royal Society is prepared to guarantee his remuneration and it is proposed he should be sent on a nine month commission. Foster hopes His Majesty's Secretary of State will see his way to making the same provision with regard to transport and maintenance of this observor. The Committee also think that the combating the disease will be much assisted if Dr Hodges of the local staff can be relived of his official duties in order that he may join Drs Nabarro and Catellani in the investigation. |
