| Description | Outlines the history of the National Antarctic Expedition, how the sum was raised for the enterprise, and the creation of the 'Discovery'. It was agreed that a relief ship would be necessary, as the crew would otherwise put themselves at undue risk while wintering alone in the notoriously uncertain polar regions. A relief ship called the 'Morning' was therefore obtained. The 'Discovery' was found fast in ice, and only for the arrival of the 'Morning' were they replenished with stock. The 'Morning' was sent away by Captain Robert Scott to ensure her safe return.
Since the 'Discovery' has not arrived in New Zealand, and as provisions will be getting low, it is of utmost importance that the 'Morning' should revisit. Huggins and Markham apply for a grant for this purpose. |
