| Description | Writes to highlight particular points from the Kodaikanal and Bombay Observatory annual reports for 1902, which have been laid before the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society. Regarding Kodiakanal the Committee wish to point out to the Indian Government: the imperfect protection of the main observatory from damp and the great desirability of providing an artificial heating system to protect the instruments from injury; the imperfect condition of the cover of the photo-heliograph; the necessity of erecting as soon as practicable quarters for the additional European assistant whom it is hoped the Government may see their way to appoint in view of the recommendation in the Committee's letter of 28 April 1903. The Committee think it desirable that the report should contain more definite information than it does at present on the scientific results obtained at the observatory.
Regarding the reports of the Director of the Bombay Observatory, the Committee are glad to learn of the removal of the magnetic work to a more suitable site. Regarding the selection of five quiet days for the determination of the magnetic diurnal inequalities, the Committee think it highly desirable the list of quite days selected be identical all over the world. The Indian Observatories should therefore select the days under reference in concert with the European Observatories. |
