TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State for India, India Office, Whitehall, S.W.
Date12 August 1903
DescriptionIn reply to the Under Secretary's letter of 17 July regarding the investigations Mr Stanley Gardiner desires to make in the Indian Ocean, neither His Majesty's Government nor the South African Colonies have been appealed to. Foster's former letter gives some of the reason which led the Society to address the Government of India in the first instance. The greater part of the area which it is proposed to investigate lies on the direct route between India and South Africa and between India and Mauritius. Moreover, a large part of the imports into Mauritius and the Seychellles come from India, as do many of the inhabitants. It is therefore submitted that India has an interest not wholly 'indirect and remote' in a more exact knowledge of the area in question.
