TitleCopy letter from Sir Clements Robert Markham and Sir William Huggins, to Captain Robert Falcon Scott
DateSeptember 1903
DescriptionThanks Scott for his report and appreciates the admirable way in which he has so far as possible carried out the duties entrusted to him. The courage, zeal and energy with which the crew have worked under trying circumstances deserves and has their warmest praise. The geographical results obtained are already declared by geographers to be of high value, and they trust that the remaining scientific results will also be found to be of great interest.

On learning of the arrival of the 'Morning' at New Zealand that Scott was detained in the ice, the two Societies made an appeal to His Majesty's Government for aid, in sending out the 'Morning' again for relief. This appeal led to an offer on the part of His Majesty's Government to undertake through the Admiralty, the whole of the relief expedition. This is further explained by the listed copies of letters enclosed [not enclosed]. The offer was cordially accepted by the Societies and the 'Terra Nova' and 'Morning' are being dispatched to bring relief. Scott should receive instructions to all his movements from the Lords of Admiralty until they return to New Zealand or Australia.
