TitleCopy letter from Sir Michael Foster, to the Secretary of State for War, War Office
Date26 October 1903
DescriptionIn February permission was given by the Secretary of State for War to direct Lieutenant Colonel David Bruce to proceed to Uganda to superintend the investigation into the Sleeping Sickness disease, being carried out under the auspices of His Majesty's Government, acting on the advise of the Royal Society.

Bruce has now returned to England and in the opinion of the Society has performed his task in a masterly manner. Following up an observation made by Dr Castellani, who was previously engaged on the enquiry, Bruce has brought conclusive evidence that the disease is due to a parasite carried by the fly Glossina palpalis. Continuing the enquiry in accordance with suggestions made by Bruce, may be looked upon as a first step towards measures which it is to be hoped may eventually lead to the arrest of the disease. Congratulates the Royal Army Medical Corps on the striking services to sciences thus rendered by one of its distinguished members.
