| Description | Copies of the Sleeping Sickness report will be with the Superintendent shortly. Summarizes that the report contains absolutely conclusive evidence that Sleeping Sickness is due to the presence in the central nervous system of a parasite similar to that which occurs in Nagana or Tsetse Fly disease. There is evidence that transmission of the parasite if by a fly, Glossina palpalis, and this fly only. Explains how this knowledge impacts on measures to combat the disease.
Explains why Captain Geig should not be left in Uganda to continue his work single handed, following the departure of Lieutenant Colonel [David] Bruce and Dr Nabarro. The resources of the Royal Society available for the purposes of this investigation now being exhausted, Foster suggests a member of the R A M C be seconded and briefly discusses the work that would be undertaken.
Whilst the Commission was to study Sleeping Sickness, the observations made during this enquiry have brought to light the wide-spread existence in Uganda of actual or potential causes of disease in animals and man in the form of parasites. An exact knowledge of the causes and nature of such diseases seems urgently demanded. Such knowledge is also called for in various parts of the Colonies and in the interests of the Empire it seems most desirable that a well organized and adequate investigation of these diseases should be undertaken. |
