TitleCopy letter from Archibald Geikie, to the Under Secretary of State for India

DescriptionGeikie states that the Advisory Committee of the Royal Society have considered the papers enclosed in their letter of 2 October, and have authorised him to communicate the following:

Their satisfaction with the evidence contained in the Report of the Board of Scientific Advice for India and their congratulations to the Government of India on the good work undertaken by that Board.
They cannot yet make detailed criticisms, due to the fact the Board's work has only recently begun, and the fact the Committee have only seen a general programme of work.
They agree with the proposal to prepare a 'Manual of Indian Cultivated Plants' to be carried out by the Botanical Department.
They suggest that at least one river draining the Peninsula of India, possibly Godavari, be included in the study of "the discharge of our large rivers" referred to in Resolution VIII (b) (5), with detail given of the importance of that river and its study in comparison to other rivers.
They express their interest in proposed investigations as to sewage as referred to in the programme of works for 1903-4, in particular to the fact that further to getting rid of sewage, they will also look into the use of products from the purification process for manurial purposes. Close attention is said to be currently being paid to the subject in England and the consequent value of an advance in their knowldge through study of their work is noted. The additional value of consultation between the investigators in India and those in England.is highlighted, with the Committee ready to bring this interchange of knowledge about should the Government of India agree.

Geikie has enclosed [included] a Report of the Sub-Committee on Disease of Animals which reflects their interest in the veterinary investigations mentioned.
