| Description | In response to their letter of 29 December, Geikie is directed to explain that the Tropical Diseases Committee of the Royal Society have made arrangements, pending the agreement of the Portuguese Government, for four cases of Sleeping Sickness to be treated without charge in England, with two cases to be taken by Sir Patrick Manson at the London School of Tropical Medicine and two by Professor John Rose Bradford and Professor Sidney Martin at University College Hospital.
The Royal Society will bear the cost of transport if it is not too great, but cannot definitely undertake it until an approximate cost is known. If the Under Secretary is able to provide such an estimate and it is within the Society's means, Geikie will begin to make arrangements for the patients. He states that the funds from the Government Grant administered by the Society for the Sleeping Sickness enquiry have been completely used, and it has no large fund to apply to for further costs, and is, in fact, struggling with the printing and office expenditure of the Tropical Diseases Committee work.
Geikie asks that the Society's thanks are conveyed to the Marquess of Lansdowne for his assistance. |
