TitleCopy letter from Joseph Larmor, to the Under Secretary of State, India Office, S.W.
Date22 February 1904
DescriptionLarmor states that the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society have considered their letter of 25 August enclosing correspondence about the work of the Poona Observatory under the Directorship of Mr Naegaavala, and they reaffirm their report of 31 October 1902 - 'that the work now being carried on at Poona is of value and should proceed, but that no new departure should be instituted pending the retirement of the present Director', and further recommend that sun spot spectra work should be preceeded with as a priority. They cannot judge the Director's other work, but recommend that he concentrate his attention on the sun spectra, alongside such other work as is possible with the existing staff and equipment.

The Committee further considered Sir John Eliot's memorandum on the work of the Meteorological Department during 1902, and have no comment to make on the observations but they refer the Secretary of State to their letter of 6 May 1903 regarding the Observatory at Kodaikanal and to urge the importance of carrying out its recommendations.

They are satisfied that the work of the Magnetic Survey in Inida in proceeding in line with the scheme proposed in 1902.
