| Description | Harrison has discovered that the date currently proposed for the May Soirée, 18 May, is not ideal, as a meeting of the Government Grant Committee is scheduled for the same day, a Council meeting is due the following day, and it is also Degree Day at the London University. He also mentions that Mr Hill, Financial Secretary of London University, who has been given responsibility by Arthur Rucker for the Soirée to be given to the International Association on the 27 May, has recently informed him that, contrary to their understanding, it would be better for the gap between the two Soirées to be longer. As a consequence, he asks that Crookes agree to proposing to Council the date of 11 May instead, and if he believes the Soirée Committee should be informed, Harrison will send a circular to allow the matter to be finalised at the Council next week.
A meeting of the Exhibits Sub-Committee needs to be arranged as soon as possible, and he proposes two possible dates. Hill wishes to attend so as to have notice of the people they propose to ask, and Harrison enquires if Crookes has any objections to Hill being invited.
Harrison also writes on a matter other than Royal Society business, explaining that he has recently met Count Vay de Vaya, on the introduction of Mr Wyndham, the Irish Secretary, who has recently returned from five years in Korea and China having spent the time inspecting Institutions of his Church, in which he is noted to be a high dignitary, and making 'interesting observations on the people'. Wyndham believes he ought to give a public lecture, but as the Royal Society would not be an appropriate venue, Harrison proposes that he might be found an opening at the Royal Institution. If Crookes can assist, he proposes that he write directly to Vay de Vaya. Wyndham's secretary has expressed his gratitude that Harrison has put the matter in Crookes' hands. |
