Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Dr Joseph Larmor, Fellow of the Royal Society |
Date | 5 January 1904 |
Description | Harrison has sent Larmor's memorandum about Science in Schools to the printers, but suggests it would be impossible to hold a meeting of that Committee on the 14 January as three other meetings are already fixed for that day, namely the Officers' meeting, the Catalogue of Scientific Papers, and the Mathematics Committee. He suggests 15 January or the following Monday, which would also allow more time to receive comments on the draft circular and Officer discussions beforehand. Sir Archibald is noted as supporting this view, and Harrison has, as suggested, written to Sir John Evans, who fixed the date of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers Committee meeting.
Harrison takes the blame for the Standing Order difficulty about Professor Hugh Longbourne Callendar, explaining that he had forgotten the rule in relation to the Sectional Committees. He proposes two options for resolving the problem - either that the phrase "notwithstanding the provisions of Standing Order..." be inserted in the Minutes of the last Council Meeting after the appointment of the Physics Committee, or they pass an order at the next meeting to indicate that as they wish to appoint Callendar as Chairman, the Standing Order be waived. The Treasurer is said to prefer the second option.
Harrison is sorry that he missed Larmor recently due to being in the store-room, explaining he wished to discuss matters with him before writing Larmor's Circular about stock received from Sir Archibald, and outlining his position on the matter. Harrison will compose a modified Circular to reflect the points he makes and show it to Larmor on his next visit. |
