TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, "General Post Office"
Date21 December 1889
DescriptionFoster, in reply to Mr Baines' letter of 14 December (reference 349276/89), is directed to send thanks on behalf of the President and Council of the Royal Society for the enquiries which he has caused to be made. In relation to arrangements with the Board of Customs which he has proposed, Foster states that it will not be necessary in the case of all foreign parcels to the Society, but they would be obliged if the plan can be adopted in the case of parcels from abroad labelled with these words "To be opened at the Society's rooms". In return they will promise that "such parcels shall not be opened except in the presence of a Customs Officer, and that the Society will defray the expense of the attendance of such an Officer".
