Rix notes that he has a short additional list from the Royal Society Treasurer, John Evans.
He has a second long printed list from Professor Newton.
He notes that Newton declines to handle the list of Foster's queries from Newton's original list, as he considers the second printed list to be sufficient.
The ones which Foster selected as affirmatives from the original list, remain in the hands of Messrs McLachlan & Vines, neither of whom have sent in revises or additions.
The 'Annals of Botany' have been put in hand.
Rix reflects that it will make a very long list. Foster is to let Rix know whether he wishes to have any of the documents listed printed for the Committee.
He has also been investigating the matter of appointing Committees to hold office until 1 January 1891, but as they are Committees of Council, they can only be appointed by each new Council to hold office for as long as it is itself in office. The practice of the Library Committee holding office until 1 January was begun by Mr W White as it was often held between 30 November and the December Council. It seems irregular, and Rix believes it beyond the powers of Council to appoint a committee that will operate partly in the time of the Council's successors, so he recommend consulting the President.
Rix states that Foster did not return the Astronomer Royal's verdict about Poole and the chronometers, and supposes he will want it to report to Council. He has also received Foster's telegram, and had already written to Dr Gilbert for his title. |
