Rix encloses a request [not included] sent by someone who has never had to conduct a soirée where experiments are the main feature, noting that from Monday to Wednesday gasfitters, carpenters and electric lighters will be in the rooms and it will be difficult to know what to do first and so any big committee is out of the question.
Dr Harley, who visited yesterday, has after being asked twice, returned his full paper, rewritten for the third time. Rix states it was only lent to him to make an abstract from it, and the rewrite is awkward as it has already been sent to one referee, and has now gone to the second, so that they will not really be reporting on the same paper. Harley believed the reason why an abstract was requested was that the paper was considered good enough for 'Transactions of the Royal Society', and Rix points out that this misunderstanding stems from the new policy of making abstracts of 'Proceedings of the Royal Society' papers and referring them, which has confused some Fellows of the Society. To accept or reject outright would be simplier.
Rix found Mr Murray's letter, but it is on printed paper and no address at Daleham Gardens given, so he has telegraphed Edinburgh for the address.
The first batch of manuscripts for the 'Catalogue of Scientific Papers' are ready, but Mr Clay met the Society Treasurer and said they would not be able to begin for a week or ten days, so it was arranged they would sent a messanger when they are ready. |
