Description | Under the direction of the Royal Society and Royal Astronomical Society, expeditions will be sent to Spain, Algeria and Egypt to observe the total eclipse of the sun on 30 August. Details sites: Oropesa and a station near Burgons, Philippeville and Guelams and a station near Assuan. Details observers: H L Callendar and J Evershed to Spain, J N Lockyer and H F Newall to Algeria, and H H Turner to Assuan.
Hopes His Majesty's Government will assist the observers as they have done on previous occasions, by obtaining leave from the Governments concerned for the erection of temporary structures and the provision of free customs duty.
Sir N Lockyer will proceed to Philippeville by one of His Majesty's ships from Gibraltar and it will be necessary that leave should be obtained from the French Government for himself and some of the crew of the man-of-war to land and pass freely between the ship and shore. It will further be of great assistance to the Expedition if His Majesty's Government will ascertain whether the local authorities at the sites will be disposed to render assistance by assuming the expeditions from all molestation and other hindrance during the observations, and possibly by giving other direct help.
Encloses a statement showing the allocation of the observers to the several stations and other particulars [not enclosed], and would be glad to provide any further information required. |
