DescriptionThe President and Council have been considering Mr Cox's letter of 29 April and wish to accept Mr Lyttelton's proposal that the Society should surrender £500 of the grant of the £1000 allocated to the Society from the Tropical Diseases Research Fund for 1905, and should agree to a similar reduction for the four succeeding years, for the purpose of instituting a chair of Protozoology in connection with the University of London. The University of London is willing to establish the Professorship on the following conditions: that the Professorship be not assigned to any particular school; that the principal object of the Professorship shall be research; and the the Professor not be required to devote his time to routine teaching.

With reference to his letter of 4 December 1904, Geikie is desired to express once more the conviction of the President and Council that it will be a matter of great difficulty to secure an efficient Professor in a subject of research where the enquirers are so few in number. While every effort should be used to make the Professorship a permanent post, it would be advantageous if the person first appointed should hold it only temporarily and that before permanence is established, the question of the occupant of the chair should be re-considered, with a view of obtaining the services of the best man then available.
