| Description | The Secretary's letter of 20 June and its accompanying documents were under the consideration of the President and Council of the Royal Society at their meeting yesterday, and whilst strictly adhering to the conditions stated in their letter to the Foreign Office of 1 March 1906, regarding the participation of Britain in the International Seismic Association, they would advise His Majesty's Government accede to the request that Britain should be represented at the proposed conference to be held in Berlin on 13 August.
The President and Council strongly think that alteration in the terms of the Strasbourgh Convention, made and unanimously agreed to by the Seismic Committee of the International Association of Academies at Frankfort in October, should not be modified in any point. The President and Council recommend a distinct instruction to this effect should be issued to the delegate and that the German Government should be informed of this instruction. The Society recommends Professor [Edward Albert Sharpey-]Schafer of the University, Manchester, be appointed the British delegate. Schafer was Chairman of the International Committee which met at Frankfort. There would be considerable advantage if Schafer could be accompanied by some Government official conversant with legal matters, perhaps from the British Embassy a Berlin. |
