TitleCopy letter from Joseph Larmor, to Charles Chree, [Fellow of the Royal Society]
Date11 July 1905
DescriptionThe Society has had interview with Captain Scott on behalf of Mr Bernacchi. The Society gathers that Bernacchi's services are still asked for to explain from time to time about his observations. They are also told that Bernacchi's gravity work is going soon with out any [?] having been fixed. Gathers from Scott that it is out of the question to [?] the matter of Bernacchi's working with Chree at Kew, but Chree and Sir A Geikie have promised that they would support a proposal to the Finance Committee to give him a subscription of £50 for giving his services from time to time. They would be glad to learn Chree and Glazebrook's opinions on these matters and also under the new condition of money being made available from the sale of the ship. According to Scott, Bernacchi is the only one of his men who is quite stranded and he has been desirous to stop scientific pursuits and take to something within his range. Larmor told Scott that he would write to the National Physical Laboratory and let him know the result if there was any.
