TitleCopy letter from [Joseph Lamor], to the Under Secretary, Colonial Office, Whitehall, S.W.
Date2 August 1905
DescriptionIn reply to Antrobus' letter of 25 July transmitting copies of documents from Uganda with reference to an application from professor Minchin for a grant of subsistence allowance for himself and assistant, in the conditions entered into by Minchin with the Royal Society there is no allusion to any question of such allowance. At the same time Larmor has no reason to doubt that the subject was mentioned in conversation between him and Professor [Edwin Ray] Lankester or Colonel [David] Bruce, and that from such conversation Professor Minchin was led to expect that in addition to the pecuniary arrangement made with the Society, there would be some further grant of subsistence allowance from the Uganda authorities, as was the case for Bruce. Under these circumstances Larmor feels sure that the President and Council of the Society would be glad if such subsistence allowance could be made to Minchin and his assistant. Thinks the case of the assistant especially strong as the rate of pay for which he had consented to serve in Uganda is much below what he might have been expected to claim for work in a tropical climate.
