| Description | Geikie communicates the eight recommendations made by the Royal Society following consideration of the recent stages of investigation into Mediterranean Fever.
They believe work should be continued during 1906, but that the composition of the commission needs to be reconsidered to expediate research and guard against the impact of personnel changes. The unavailability of Lieutenant Colonel Davies, Major Horrocks and Staff-surgeon Shaw is noted. Application has been made to the Director General of the Army Medical Service for two officers to continue and complete the work of Lieutenant Colonel Davies in the army barracks and hospitals of Malta. The need for full investigation of possible cases and effective evacuation and disinfection of barracks, and the complete isolation of Mediterranean Fever patients is emphasised. A similar call for one officer has been put out to the Director General of the Medical Department of the Navy.
The three medical officers will be members of the Commission and will report directly to the Society's Committee. They wish to retain Captain Kennedy during 1906, and for Dr Zammit to return the following summer. They recommend the appointment of Dr Eyre, of the Bacteriological Laboratories of Guy's Hospital to fill the need for an experienced bacteriologist, as the hospital Governors have granted him six months leave for the purpose, and they hope he can depart by the 24 March so as to arrive in time for fever season. The rate of pay claimed by Eyre is that granted to Dr Johnston, namely £500 with an allowance of 30 shillings a day and travel expenses. |
