TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Dr Richard Tetley Glazebrook, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date18 July 1907
DescriptionHarrison states that the paper on the current balance by Ayrton and others is to go to press in a week. As one appointed referee is ill, Harrison had the paper at the Royal Society so he could set it up in advance. He expresses surprise that the authors' claim about accuracy of linear measurements of wire coils should be supported by poor knowledge of gravity.

He outlines the paper's cost at around £100, and notes that Glazebrook promised to send two more such papers in the next week. The Royal Society's Treasurer reported a deficit of £500 to Council at their last meeting, which is in addition to the £500 deficit of the previous year, all of which can be attributed to the rise in publishing done for the National Physical Laboratory, Lister Institute, Cancer Research and other such bodies. A notice of action for artificial restriction is before Council, and though Officers have power to proceed on a small scale with papers in the vacation, he anticipates the veto of the Treasurer on the expenditure Glazebrook suggests.

Harrison believes there is a special Government Fund for the expenses of the Units Congress. He proposes that if each department concerned could give a substantial contribution, in case the Society's referees oppose the papers, or support an application to the Treasury for an increased grant to meet such expenditure, Harrison hopes he can proceed with the matter. Harrison hopes that Glazebrook sees that this is needed, or else a special meeting of Council.
