TitleCopy letter from Archibald Geikie, to Dr John Milne, [Fellow of the Royal Society]
Date16 July 1907
DescriptionGeikie communicates the Treasury's enquiry about whether they wish for second delegate to the forthcoming meeting of the Commission of the International Seismic Association, and proposes Milne, with Arthur Schuster having been nominated by the President of the Royal Society as their first representative of Great Britain on the permanent Commission. The Treasury have been informed of their proposed delegates, so Milne may hear directly from them.

Geikie urges Milne to attend, suggesting he will be welcomed by the foreign members, including the Germans, all of whom consider Milne a 'pioneer' in the field, and some of whom expressed regret that he had been unable to attend the meetings. He emphasises the service Milne would be doing were he to attend, and further presumes that if the request were to come from the Treasury, that they would pay his expenses. Geikie also suggests his attendance would enable him to resolve misunderstandings with foreign members and prevent any recurrence of friction regarding his stations.
