TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to the Secretary, Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Date12 November 1907
DescriptionHarrison has been compelled to delay his response to their letter of 4 November regarding their nomination of a representative on the General Board of the National Physical Laboratory.

He notes that the position regarding Mr Maw is complicated, but he outlines his reading of the scheme of organisation of the Laboratory in this matter; namely, that Maw's term of office as representative of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on the General Board ceases next month, but he will continue to serve on the Executive Committee, as chosen by the Royal Society in place of Sir Edward Carbutt, deceased, and will continue in that role for Carbutt's term of office which ends in 1909. Maw will, therefore be an additional member of the General Board from December 1907 until December 1909. As a consequence, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is obliged to nomimate an ordinary member of the General Board other than Maw. The only way for Maw to continue to represent their Institution would be for the President and Council of the Royal Society to waive the condition barring retiring members from reappointment for a year after they have left.

Harrison invites further discussion if he wishes, offering to visit him or see him at the Royal Society.
