| Description | The letter from the India Office of 4 July and the enclosures relative to thereto have been circulated to the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society and their opinions obtained in the form of minutes. There is unanimity regarding the scientific and practical value of the recent developments in Indian Meteorology. The Committee are hopeful of important results from the geographical extension of the field of observation and more definite knowledge of the upper atmosphere that observations with kites and balloons promise to provide. They believe these developments are well worth the trouble and expense involved.
The question of the abandonment of the collection of ships' logs is one on which further information is desirable. Observations on remote islands which are suggested as a substitute, would be reliable only if controlled by frequent official inspection and they might involve a regular meteorological establishment, in which case a magnetic one might as well be added. Members of the Committee conversant with marine meteorology express the hope that the accuracy required in ships' meteorological logs may yet be ascertainable by enlisting the interest of the ships' officers in synchronous work, and consider the value of the results quite justified the special effort in that direction. It seems advisable the Observatories Committee should further consider these special questions at their next meeting. |
