| Description | As the Royal Society is out of session, Larmor is looking to Balfour for advice about a letter. He will remember that Council had almost decided that the application from the Home Office for an investigation [into Glassworkers' Cataract] was a matter for the special Opthalmic Societies, when Balfour intervened and convinced them to assist. A Committee has been got together, composed of chemists, physiologists and opthalmic surgeons, the latter of which the Royal Society has no claim. The have a formed a plan of experimental investigations, and applied to the Home Office for a grant.
The letter in question is dispiriting as an index of the degree of sincerity attaching to such applications to the Royal Society from Departments to the Government. If the advice offered is followed and recourse is had to the Committee administering the Government Grant, which contains non-Royal Society bodies, the subject may pass over into the press.
The Royal Society are becoming accustomed to hear that if legal advice is wanted by the Government the market rate must be paid, but if medical investigation is needed it is up to the Royal Society. Matters are getting very delicate and difficult. President and Council would like his urgent advice. |
