Date27 February 1909
Description'Dear Sir,
In reply to your letter of yesterday the only information I can give you about John Carstairs is that in the Records of our Society there is the name of John Carstairs Esq. of Woodhouse in Huntingdonshire and Stratford in Essex, who was elected on March 14th 1811. He is described in his Certificate as "a gentleman well acquainted with several branches of mathematics and natural science".
The most complete work of biographical reference to Fellows that I know of is the Dictionary of National Biography.'
