| Description | The Committee of Tropical Diseases have already had before them the letter from Sir David Bruce dated 9 August, of which the Colonial Office has been made aware of, in which he outlines his desire to return home to England from Mpumu, accompanied by Captains Hamerton and Bateman. The departure of all of these officers would prematurely end important investigations. Some 30 to 40 experiments are being undertaken to discern the duration of infectivity of flies after feeding on animals infected with Trypanosomes.
Another very important enquiry is directed to the discovery of a living animal reservoir, other than that afforded by the human subject, for the parasite of Sleeping Sickness. Information points to the possibility that the parasites are being kept alive for considerable periods in some host portions of the lake shote which have been long uninhabited by humans.
In light of this, it is hoped that the services of Hamerton and Bateman can be retained in Uganda for another year. The Royal Society would like The Colonial Office to approach the War Office with a request for an extension of leave. |
