Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Professor Silvanus Phillips Thompson, Fellow of the Royal Society |
Date | 23 October 1909 |
Description | Sir Joseph Larmor reports that Thompson has been asking to have a meeting of the Library Committee. The Committee last met nearly a year ago, and made certain recommendations which were adopted by Council and which have been in the progress of execution. Some of the matters are not yet complete, and it would seem premature to call together the Committee. The matters are connected: shelving accommodation and the preparation for a new catalogue of serials.
Harrison was prepared with a definite scheme for the catalogue to be put in hand at once, but matters intervened. Council felt that the rearrangement of the books should be made before embarking on a new catalogue of them. This rearrangement involved clearing out 25 tonnes of publications. Then it was referred to the Sub-Committee to consider and revise the list of serials taken into the Library. A complication was introduced by a proposal from the Zoological Society for some common action about zoological serials. A member of the Sub-Committee was nominated to serve on the Joint Committee, and so far nothing seems to have been done on the matter. That question now affects the construction of the new catalogue. |
