| Description | The Sleeping Sickness Committee has recently had a letter before them from Sir David Bruce, calling attention to the services of No. 10580 Lance Sergeant A Gibbons of the Royal Army Medical Corps, who has been employed as a laboratory assistant to the Commission for the last year. He is highly trained and holds the position of Assistant in the Pathological Department of the Royal Army Medical College, London.
He assisted Bruce in laboratory work in Pietermaritzburg in 1897 and afterwards during the South African war. In 1900-01 he acted as a lab assistant to the Dysentery and Enteric Commission and in 1903 accompanied Bruce to Uganda, where he did excellent work on the Sleeping Sickness investigation.
He has worked with assiduity and intelligence, and his duties have been important. Bruce indicates that at present 170 monkeys, 50 cattle and many other animals are under observation. His case is brought to the attention of the War Office in the hope that a reward might be given to him. |
