| Description | Sending a report which has now been adopted by President and Council [no enclosures]. The proposed arrangements arose out of a communication from the Meteorological Committee to the Director of the National Physical Laboratory, intimating that the Committee would be unable to continue their subsidy of £400 a year to the observations at Kew Observatory after the end of 1910.
It appeared that that this might mean the end of Kew functioning as a meteorological observatory, losing high international prestige with which it is associated. Council appointed a Committee to confer on the matter with representatives of the National Physical Laboratory, including the Director of the Meteorological Office. Section IV of the report outlines the arrangement of the distribution of work which was arrived at. The concentration of interests will be of high advantage.
The Meteorological Committee will need additional funds, amounting to £550 per year. The work carried out by Kew has produced considerable profits, a surplus amounting to £2,984. The National Physical Laboratory will retain the testing work, but in partial return therefore it will retain, and provide retirement for, the older members of Kew staff. |
