It is my duty to inform you that in view of the lamented death of our Sovereign, King Edward VII, the Royal Society desires to present to His Majesty an Address of Condolence and loyalty. In accordance with the right of direct access to the Sovereign on the Throne which has been granted to the Society (See in particular letter from Home Secretary A43800/320 of 10th December 1887) the President and Council would await His Majesty's pleasure to receive a delegation from them, and they respectfully express the hope that the King would be graciously pleased to become Patron of the Society, as His predecessors on the Throne have done, and to sign His name in the Charter-book of the Society. I shall esteem it a favour if you will kindly inform me when it will be convenient to His Majesty to receive us.'
