TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Alfred Bray Kempe, Treasurer of the Royal Society
Date8 November 1910
DescriptionHarrison would like Kempe's opinion on the exploiting of matter from Royal Society publications by trading firms for commercial purposes, which has become an acute problem. Dr Augustus Desire Waller came in yesterday considerably troubled about a case connected with a paper by himself and Dr Veley published two months ago. Mr White had told the representative of the company who wished to reprint it that authors' consent must be first obtained. They addressed themselves to the authors as if it rested with them alone.

Waller yesterday wanted to know if he could shelter himself behind the Royal Society's rights in the paper to prevent wholesale use of it. Now, however, the company have taken the matter in to their own hands and issued an advertisement in the 'Daily Telegraph'. There is also another application from the Silica Syndicate, with a similar object in view. It seems the Society is becoming helpless to prevent infringement of copyright. It does seem unfortunate that Veley and Waller should have mentioned this particular firm so prominently by name.
