TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Professor Horace Lamb, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date16 January 1911
DescriptionThe procedure regarding the provisional action of chairmen and secretaries in dealing with papers received is governed by the Standing Orders which he will find in the Year Book, page 72. and onwards. Since Sir Joseph Larmor became a Secretary, the proceedings of the Mathematics Committee have been conducted almost entirely by correspondence under the provisions of Standing Order 30, and to save time, the Chairman frequently, has nominated Fellows to act as referees in anticipation of such appointments by the Committee.

When the Committee meets or has proposals circulated these appointments are confirmed or sometimes supplemented. All acts required the ultimate sanction of the Committee. but a great deal has been done by chairmen and secretaries acting in consultation and obtaining indemnity afterwards. The postcard Lamb received upon Major MacMahon's paper is to obtain his concurrence in the provisional selection of referees suggested by Sir Joseph Larmor.
