| Description | President and Council of the Royal Society have had under their consideration Gollan's letter of 29 August enclosing a scheme for the organization of a Marine Biological Station in Bermuda, and making application for a grant of £100 voted by the Royal Society in 1903 as a contribution. President and Council will be pleased to make the payment, and the Treasurer's cheque is being sent herewith.
As the Advisory Board is so important, since it would control the scientific work done at the station, Bradford requests more precise details about its constitution. Without these details its difficult to forsee how possible it will be to maintain the station under British control. It would seem undesirable to limit the universities represented on the Advisory Board to those sending students to the station. Council thinks from the outset it would be inexpedient to prescribe from the outset that the Director's services are to be gratuitous.
Professor Stanley Gardiner has noted the exceptional opportunities for physiological work on the fauna afforded by a station such as that at Bermuda, and Council would like to suggest the Bermuda Natural History Society allocate some funds for suitable apparatus for such work.
As the station is a great distance from Great Britain, the Council fear it is not possible for the Natural History Society to look for large financial support or a regular supply of students from this country. The Royal Society might be able from time to time to encourage students who are receiving endowments from them to carry out researches at the Bermuda Station, and the Council would be willing to nominate representatives on the Advisory Board if requested, as long as financial support is not a contingency. |
