Description'With reference to correspondence in August and December 1910 (M.8788) relating to the use of one of His Majesty's ship for the purpose of conveying a party of astronomers from Sydney to Vavau to observe the eclipse of April 28, 1911, I am directed by the President and Council of the Royal Sociey to convey to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty the thanks of the Royal Society placing HMS "Encounter" at the service of the party; and to express their appreciation of the valuable assistance afforded to the observers by the captain, officers and men of HMS "Encounter", in the preparation for and observing the eclipse.'
